The basketball season has started strongly with some notable performances from both boys and girls teams.
In the Under 14 boys age group the team remain unbeaten, having defeated Sandringham and Nicholas Breakspear in the District League and St Columbas College in the County league 80 - 43. The victory against Sandringham was extremely hard fought and particularly impressive as Sandringham are last years County Champions. A possible County final beckons if they can maintain their hard work and commitment to training. Billy Cresswell has captained the team and led by example, but the whole squad are really starting to play some good team basketball.
In the girls age groups, the year 8 team competed a year out of age in the District Rally and were only beaten by size, strength and speed and certainly not basketball ability or hard work. They defeated Sandringham and Roundwood Park losing the other three games and finished fourth out of six teams. The fact they only lost by four points to the eventual winners (Nicholas Breakspear) is a measure of how well they played. Their performance bodes well for the Under 13 County League Season.
The Under 16 girls team retained their District Title, beating Sandringham 15 - and Roundwood Park 20 - 5. The squad consisted of 7 year 10 and 2 year 11 students. They are an impressive team and hopefully the year nine's will go on to reach their third successive County Final this year in the year 10 age group and the year eleven's will do the same in the Senior Girls County Competition.
The year seven girls team played really well in their District Tournament, winning all four games, scoring 30 points and only conceding 5.
The first game saw an easy 12 - 0 win against Samuel Ryder and this was followed up by 6 - 0 and 4 - 0 victories against Roundwood Park and Sir John Lawes respectively. Our final game against Sandringham was our closest but, even after making a number of substitutions throughout the match, we still came out 8 - 5 winners.
Lucia Grimer was our top scorer with 10 points, closely followed by Amber Young with 8. Our team defence was impressive, epitomised by Alice King against Sir John Lawes who sacrificed the chance to score and marked their strongest player out of the game.
The team now go on to represent St Albans in the County Tournament later in the season.
Well done and lets hope the season continues to be so successful!

Senior Boys Competition
Unfortunately, due to my ongoing back problem we are going to have to withdraw from the Senior Boys Competition. We have made every effort to stay in the competition but success in other competitions/ sports means that fixture pressure in a very short half term means there is no time to complete our league and semi final fixtures in the time available. Thank you to the whole squad for all of your hard work over previous seasons and look forward to challenging strongly at County level next season.

Under 14 boys County League basketball
There is a County League fixture for the Under 14 boys squad the first Monday back against Nicholas Breakspear. Please check the noticeboard at the gym and let Mr Panting or Mr Jump know if you cannot play. This is an important game as there is still the chance to qualify for the semi finals if we can win our last two games.
Senior County League basketball after half term
The two Senior Boys County League group matches have been arranged for after half term. We are playing St Columbas on Tuesday 26th Feb and Richard Hale on Tuesday 5th March, both are home games. Squad lists are on the noticeboard at the gym and there should be a copy on the notice board in the sixth form common room. There are sixth form, year 11 and year 10 members in the squad. Please see Mr Jump or Mr Panting asap if you cannot play and tick your name on the team sheet if you are available. Many thanks, Mr Stewart

Important changes to competitions/fixtures
Due to an ongoing back injury I have reluctantly had to withdrawn a number of teams from certain competitions. With the department one person light and the number of extra curricular fixtures/competitions entered in other sports, there is just not enough dates available to meet the present fixture backlog.
I have based these decisions on distances travelled to fixtures, deadline dates, fixtures already played in competitions, teams playing out of age group and opportunities for players to compete in other competitions.
Therefore the competitions we have had to withdraw from are: Under 13 girls County League, Under 16 Boys County League and Under 17 Boys National Cup.
I hope that you can appreciate that we are still in a number of County Competitions and that staff members not usually scheduled to take fixtures for these competitions will be giving up additional time to do so.
If all squad members for each team can please keep checking the blog and PE noticeboard it would really help the department.
I have posted new fixture dates for all age groups still in County Competitions and the year 7 District League starts against Roundwood Park on the 21st January. Please check the blog for new fixture dates.
Good luck in all forthcoming fixtures.
